A bit of fun in need is fun indeed

Language learning should be fun. Regardless of the context, form, function, purpose - whatever, it should be fun. Sometimes I wonder why it is any different.

Well a rather certain way to make it more fun would be to use a great tool - Dvolver. It is a very simple and user-friendly online tool by means of which digital movies can be made. The beauty of it is that virtually any content, learning objective, activity, skill or task can be presented, practised and produced by Dvolver.

Before elaborating on the different ideas for Dvolver, here is a Dvolver movie my students declared as their all-time favourite. It was created as part of a series of movies presenting different aspects of meanings that modal verbs can have in English. This one was meant to illustrate the difference between the meaning of needn't have and didn't have to . Volume should be turned on as there is music in the movie as well.

When thinking of the many ideas to be realised by Dvolver, one seems to be particular challenging and it is directed at literature teachers. Whenever computer-assisted language teaching is being mentioned, the most sceptical ones are always literature teachers saying that content in their area may not be taught that way. In other words, it is their opinion that the computer in a literature class is pretty worthless.

How about asking students to do prepare a Dvolver movie illustrating their appreciation of a poem or understanding of a piece of prose writing? The Dvolver could be a first step in the analysis whereas the second would most certainly be the obligatory essay or elaborate analysis. Why couldn't a novel be presented in the form of a dialogue between two characters exchanging ideas and conclusions regarding a short story or a piece of drama the students have read? Take a look at a very simple dialogue between Ophelia and Polonius!

Or, how about teachers of English for medical purposes? Wouldn't it be fun to create doctor-patient dialogues and present the new vocabulary from a text to be read? Or, teachers of English for economy, law, architecture, construction, engineering, etc., they could all boost their students' motivation in a class with Dvolver.

Ideas are obviously abundant. And after all, a bit of fun in need is fun indeed!
